Field trip to Sportman’s Warehouse

Well, I did what I’d said I’d never do, go out shopping on Black Friday! They mostly had moderate deals, but I still saved about 25% on the stuff I bought. They had a pretty good deal on Hornady V-Max ammo for my .22 WMR. Yeah, I know .17 HMR is the popular choice now-a-days, but .22 WMR ammo can be used for critters larger than the ones recommended for .17 HMR. Been thinking that a .17 HMR gun should be added to the wishlist, but I’m still up in the air on that one. It would be nice to try one out. Then again maybe it’s overkill, after all, I’ve already got a .22 WMR and 2 .22s.

Hope all you U.S. visitors had a good Turkey Day; I went out to eat, and still overate, to the tune of 5 extra pounds on the scale this morning.

A Muzzleloader

This time, the gun purchase is a different one, still a hunting rifle, but with a twist. I bought it online from the Sportman’s Warehouse web site and the only place that had it in stock was the store in St. George, Utah. I placed the order and waited for the email notifying me it was ready for pickup. I called the store and got a runaround until in talked to the guy in customer service called C.J. He got the order processed and ready for pickup and I drove the 120 miles to the St. George store. I finally had my hands on the muzzleloader I been trying to find for at least a year!!!

Here’s the particulars from the Sportsman’s Warehouse web site:

The Vortek StrikerFire LDR comes with the StrikerFire System . To cock the gun, simply slide the striker button forward until it locks and the rifle is cocked. The recessed de-cocking buttons allows for quick and quiet de-cocking of the firearm and the gun is also equipped with an automatic de-cocking mechanism – when the gun is opened, it is automatically de-cocked. By eliminating the external hammer, this allows for faster locktime, the ability to mount your scope closer to the bore and allows the gun to operate with less weight.

And here’s a picture:

Now all I’ve got to do is to buy supplies. I figure that’s going to be as difficult as purchasing the gum, as muzzleloading isn’t a popular form of shooting around here. It’s Black Friday and I’m headed to Sportman’s Warehouse to find if the local store carries supplies as my old stash disappeared in the move to Las Vegas. Wish me luck.

Yet Another Gun

Just received a new gun that I ordered back a few (?) months ago, never seemed to be in stock at any of the sites that I’ve visited. It’s a CZ Scorpion Evo 3 S1 decked out with Magpul equipment. This is the info from the Galleryofguns website:

If it looks like a badass gun, it sure seems that way. Can’t wait to get to the gun range to try it out.

I was try to decide between this gun and a CZ Bren 2MS 5.56, here’s the specs for the Bren:

Description: CZU BREN 2MS 5.56 PST 30RD 14B

The one I bought had several things going for it: it’s cheaper, it shoots cheaper ammo, and I might even use it for hunting small game. Not too easy to hunt with an oversized pistol.

I really bought this gun for self-defense, the neighbors down the street have a drug-dealing problem. There was a shooting at the house last year, they seemed to have stopped for a while; but apparently, from the car traffic, they’ve started back up and the LVMPD doesn’t seem to care (at least until the next shooting).

“New” Gun

Forgot to add a post for the Henry Lever Action .22 Magnum Rifle I bought back in June. I found that I wanted gun with a little more oomph than the .22 I have, but less than the .223. I wavered between a .22 Mag and a .17 HMR, but finally settled on at the .22 Mag because you can use it for larger game, and I don’t think I’ll need the longer range that the .17 HMR affords. And yeah, in the Henry gun I was looking to buy, the .22 Mag comes with a scope, while the .17 HMR only has iron sights.

Here’s a picture.

Another gun

This time I purchased a handgun, a Springfield Armory XDS 45ACP to go with my CCW. It has two capacities 5 + 1/6 + 1. It has a Tritium Front Sight and weighs 22.5 oz. The model number is XDSG93345B and I bought it at Sportman’s Warehouse on sale. Here’s a picture.

Update: 8 Aug 2020 because I got sick of Google complaining the previous picture wasn’t big enough.

New Acquisitions

Well, time for some new guns. I’ve ordered a SAVAGE 110 APEX STORM XP STAINLESS 6.5 CREEDMOOR 24-INCH 4RDS WITH SCOPE and a SAVAGE 110 APEX PREDATOR XP MOSSY OAK MOUNTAIN COUNTRY RANGE CAMO .308 WIN 20-INCH 4RDS WITH SCOPE. The Creedmoor comes with a factory mounted Vortex Crossfire II 3-9×40 scope and the .308 comes with a Vortex Crossfire 4-12×44 Scope with a BDC reticle that has been mounted from the factory. Can’t wait take them out to the shooting range to try them out.

Here’s a couple of pictures:

Update: there’s a brief article about the Savage 110 Apex Predator XP at Guns.com

Gun Recall

This from the Smith and Wesson Twitter account:

We are asking consumers of all M&P15-22 firearms manufactured BEFORE February 1, 2019 to STOP USING YOUR FIREARM UNTIL INSPECTED AND YOUR BOLT REPLACED (if necessary). To determine whether your firearm is affected, follow the steps provided at http://MP15-22SafetyAlert.com .

This recall affects my M&P 15-22. Haven’t decided whether I’m going to inspect the bolt myself or send it in, but I guess this firearm is sidelined for the time being.

Gun Range

Well, I haven’t had a chance to to go shooting for a while. It’s either lousy weather (we’ve been having a lot of that in Las Vegas lately) or my back has been bothering me. I had everything laid out to go shooting on January 13 and the back spasms got so bad I had to take a tizanidine and lay down. No driving after taking that stuff and the range is a 22 mile drive away. And this Sunday, it’s supposed to be a high of 46 degrees F. Noting like the average high of 64 F like it’s supposed to be in February. The heating bill has been much higher than average.

Been thinking of getting another long rifle, hunting variety. Maybe either a .308 (cuz even though I don’t have it anymore, I got a lot of .308 ammo), or a .243 or 6.5 . Or both. Any recommendations?

CCW Class

Well, I finally decided to take a CCW class at Briarhawk Firearms & Ammo in Las Vegas. It was Friday night and Saturday morning. Class room instruction Friday night, with range qualification on Saturday morning, followed by more instruction and a test. Got two wrong on the test. All together, a good use of time as when I get the CCW, I won’t have to pay for a $25 background check every time I buy a firearm, and I’d like to buy another 5-6 weapons. Besides, I’ll be able to legally carry a firearm in more situations than I can carry now.
